The AHA-funded SURF program at Purdue supports 5 undergraduate students annually in cardiovascular and stroke-related research through the Institutional Award for Undergraduate Student Training (IAUST). Students work with faculty mentors in an interdisciplinary setting combining biomedical engineering and clinical experience.

SPUR (Summer Program for Undergraduate Research)

SPUR is a 10-week intensive summer research program at the University of Utah. Students work 35-40 hours per week with faculty mentors on cutting-edge research projects across multiple disciplines including health, medicine, and biomedical engineering.

Program Details

  • Eligibility: Matriculated undergraduate students (not graduating before December 2026), at least 18 years old, eligible to work in the US
  • Stipend: $5,000 plus up to $500 travel reimbursement

Cardiovascular Research Training for Undergraduate Students

Nationwide Children's Hospital

The AHA-funded program at Nationwide Children's Hospital provides undergraduate students with hands-on cardiovascular research experience at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute. Research opportunities span cardiac and vascular development, molecular genetics and genomics, and cardiovascular stem cell biology.

Program Details

  • Eligibility: Junior or senior undergraduate students (or immediately post-graduation) with GPA ≥ 3.0. US citizens or visa holders (F-1, H1, H1B, J1, PR, TN). DACA requires AHA approval.
  • Stipend: $6,000 plus travel funds for scientific conference
  • Duration: 10 weeks (40 hours/week)
